Cluster voicings place adjacent scale tones—especially minor or major seconds—next to each other in register. E and F are both available in a Cmaj11 sonority, but sounding them side by side makes their half-step friction the main event.
The guitar cannot play two fretted notes on one string, so close pitch intervals must cross strings. That often requires an unusual string set, skipped strings, a partial barre, or a wider fret span than the sound suggests.
Control density with register
Seconds can sound muddy in the low register because their overtones collide. Put the close interval on the upper strings and give the bass wider spacing. You can also omit the fifth to create physical room without losing the chord’s identity.
A cluster becomes expressive when it has a destination. Hold one note while its neighbour resolves by half step, or expand the close interval into a third. Use the effect selectively under sustained melody notes, introductions, endings, and ballads.
- Identify the exact second that creates the colour.
- Keep low notes sparse and place the cluster higher.
- Check that the melody is not unintentionally buried inside the voicing.
