Iconic chord progressions, loops, and bass patterns
Compare recurring harmonic ideas across classical music, pop, J-pop, reggae, and jazz. Every card includes a timed preview, a functional explanation, historical context, and a specific feature to follow by ear.
Mood labels are listening guides, not guarantees. Tempo, melody, rhythm, arrangement, timbre, and performance can make the same progression communicate very different emotions.

Melancholic and dramatic
Diatonic lament bass
A–G–F–E descends from tonic to dominant in A minor: i–♭VII–♭VI–V.
The defining feature is the bass tetrachord, not one mandatory chord voicing. Harmonising it as Am–G–F–E creates the familiar Andalusian-cadence form, with G♯ in E major supplying the leading tone back to A.
Descending tonic-to-dominant bass patterns have carried associations with lament for centuries, but mood also depends on tempo, melody, rhythm, register, and performance.
Listen for: the whole-step bass descent followed by F–E, then G♯ pulling upward when the loop returns to Am.
Melancholic and dramatic
Chromatic lament ground
A complete chromatic fourth fills every semitone from A down to E.
Purcell’s “Dido’s Lament” is the canonical example of a chromatically descending ground bass. A genuine chromatic-fourth model includes A–G♯–G–F♯–F–E; the commonly played Am–Am/G–D/F♯–F–E variant skips G♯ and is therefore a related mixed descent rather than the complete chromatic form.
This realisation roots every chord on the current bass pitch: Am–G♯°7–G–F♯°7–F–E7. That keeps the lowest voice in one register and avoids hearing slash-chord roots leap above the ground. It is a teaching harmonisation, not a transcription of Purcell.
Listen for: six consecutive bass pitches separated by semitone, with common upper tones making the harmony feel suspended over the descent.
Melancholic and dramatic
Minor line cliché
One note moves A–G♯–G–F♯ while the A-minor triad remains in place.
The changing note may appear in the bass, an inner voice, or the melody. Chord symbols describe each vertical snapshot—Am, Am(maj7), Am7, Am6—but the ear follows one chromatic line inside an essentially prolonged tonic chord.
On guitar, keep A, C, and E fixed where possible and move only the changing voice. That economy is what separates a line cliché from four unrelated grips.
Listen for: the tension of G♯ against C in Am(maj7), then the gradual softening through G to F♯.
Melancholic and dramatic
Later La Folia
A symmetrical sixteen-bar minor framework used as a basis for variation.
The later Folia became a relatively fixed melodic-harmonic scheme in the seventeenth century. Its first half ends on V; the second half mirrors much of that route and closes on i, often placing i and V together in the penultimate bar.
Folia is better understood as a variation framework than a mood button. Composers change melody, texture, figuration, register, and rhythmic surface while the harmonic pillars remain recognisable.
Listen for: the repeated i–V–i opening, the expansion to relative-major F, and the difference between the halfway dominant and final tonic closure.
Uplifting and anthemic
Axis progression
I–V–vi–IV arranges the four most common pop chords into a circular major-key loop.
In C, C–G–Am–F avoids a final V–I cadence: IV returns plagal-style to I. That softer return helps the sequence loop without sounding finished, while the I–V opening still supplies strong forward motion.
The same four chords can be rotated to begin on vi, producing vi–IV–I–V and a more minor-centred opening. Melody, phrase placement, and bass emphasis decide which chord feels like home.
Listen for: the strong C–G launch, the emotional turn to Am, and the broad F–C plagal reset.
Uplifting and anthemic
Pachelbel sequence
I–V–vi–iii–IV–I–IV–V unfolds as a balanced eight-chord major sequence.
Pachelbel’s Canon in D popularised this version of a descending-thirds sequence. The root progression alternates descending fourths with upward seconds, while common tones and stepwise inner parts bind the chords together.
The progression is often varied with inversions so the bass can descend more smoothly. This preview keeps roots audible for recognition; a real arrangement should voice-lead the upper parts rather than jump among isolated shapes.
Listen for: paired descents C–G, A–E, and F–C, followed by IV–V preparing the loop’s return.
Uplifting and anthemic
Doo-wop or ’50s loop
I–vi–IV–V turns tonic through its relative minor before a clear dominant return.
C–Am–F–G shares three chords with the Axis loop but orders them differently. The final V creates an authentic pull back to I, giving every cycle a clear turnaround rather than a plagal reset.
The schema is strongly associated with 1950s and early-1960s rock ballads, yet it remains a general-purpose pop progression. Replacing IV with ii creates the close relative I–vi–ii–V.
Listen for: the common tones between C and Am, then the increasingly directional IV–V–I approach.
Uplifting and anthemic
Bergamasca
I–IV–V–I is the harmonic skeleton associated with a lively northern Italian dance.
The Bergamasca or Bergamask was a dance and variation tradition linked with Bergamo. Its simple tonic–subdominant–dominant–tonic frame invited melodic, rhythmic, and contrapuntal invention rather than deriving its identity from complex chord changes.
Because I–IV–V–I is also a universal cadential pattern, rhythm and style are essential if the historical reference matters. The chords alone do not automatically create a Renaissance dance.
Listen for: increasing harmonic distance from I to IV to V, followed by the most direct dominant–tonic closure in the library.
Nostalgic, groovy, and vintage
Royal Road progression
IV–V–iii–vi is the ōdō shinkō associated especially with Japanese popular music.
In C, F–G–Em–Am begins with a familiar predominant-to-dominant rise, but V moves deceptively to iii rather than I. Em then falls by fifth to Am, making the relative minor feel like an arrival without fully abandoning the major-key frame.
Seventh chords—Fmaj7, G7, Em7, and Am7—intensify the smooth common-tone writing. The progression is widely discussed in J-pop and anime-song analysis, but it also appears outside Japan.
Listen for: the expected lift from F to G, the withheld C-major resolution, and the gentle iii–vi descent into Am.
Nostalgic, groovy, and vintage
Ragtime dominant chain
I–VI7–II7–V7 turns diatonic roots into a chain of applied dominants.
C–A7–D7–G7 follows descending fifths from A onward. A7 tonicises D, D7 tonicises G, and G7 finally resolves to C, so every chromatic third has a clear forward target.
This sound is common in ragtime, vaudeville, early popular song, and jazz turnarounds. It is sometimes called the “Montgomery-Ward” progression online, but the documented Montgomery-Ward bridge is a different bridge schema, commonly represented by I7–IV7–ii7–V7 or expanded with ii–V units.
Listen for: C♯ in A7 leading to D, F♯ in D7 leading to G, and B in G7 leading home to C.
Nostalgic, groovy, and vintage
Two-chord vamp
A minor tonic and one contrasting chord create the back-and-forth “seesaw” effect.
“Seesaw loop” is an informal description, not a standard theory label. In Cm–Gm, i alternates with minor v and stays within natural minor. In Cm–F, i–IV introduces A natural and points instead toward C Dorian.
Reggae and dub can use sparse repeating harmony, but their identity comes from groove, bass, offbeat articulation, production, and ensemble interaction—not from a universal i–v formula. This preview demonstrates the harmonic vamp only.
Listen for: how little harmonic information is needed once repetition establishes C minor; imagine rhythm and bass variations carrying the form.
Jazz foundations
Major ii–V–I
Dm7–G7–Cmaj7 combines fifthwise roots with compact guide-tone resolution.
The ii chord prepares dominant function; V7 supplies the leading tone and tritone; Imaj7 resolves the phrase without losing jazz colour. In C, C in Dm7 falls to B in G7, while F is retained and then falls to E over Cmaj7.
Because the schema is defined by function and voice leading, extensions and inversions can change without erasing its identity. Practise it in every key and in fragments that omit the final tonic.
Listen for: C–B–C and F–F–E in the inner voices while the roots move D–G–C.
Jazz foundations
Minor iiø–V–i
Dm7♭5–G7♭9–Cm7 adapts the cadence to minor with ♭6 and altered dominant colour.
The half-diminished ii contains A♭, the lowered sixth of C minor. G7 restores B natural as the leading tone and often adds A♭ as a ♭9, concentrating both versions of scale degree 6 around the dominant.
“V7alt” is a family label, not one fixed chord. A dominant may use ♭9, ♯9, ♭5, or ♯5 in different combinations. This preview chooses G7♭9 so its spelling and resolutions remain explicit.
Listen for: A♭ as a shared dark colour across iiø and V7♭9, followed by B rising to C.
