The three key centres in “Giant Steps”—B, G, and E♭—are separated by major thirds and divide the octave evenly. Because the cycle is symmetrical, no single centre remains stable for long. Dominant chords and ii–V cells make each sudden arrival sound locally convincing.
“Coltrane changes” also describes applying this major-third cycle as a substitution over a slower tonal route. The technique is associated with Coltrane, but major-third cycles have precedents; the distinctive challenge here is their rapid, systematic use.
How to practise the grid
Start with only the three major-seventh tonics and sing their roots. Add the dominant before each tonic. Finally add each ii chord. This turns an intimidating chord stream into three familiar cadences connected symmetrically.
Improvisers often prioritise chord tones on every arrival because one parent scale cannot describe the whole passage. Short motifs are useful: transpose one rhythmic idea through each key centre and let the harmony supply the colour.
- Memorise centres as B–G–E♭, then reverse the cycle.
- Pair each tonic with its V7 before adding ii7.
- Practise slowly enough to hear arrivals; speed is the result, not the method.
